Early Life
Elijah Benedict was born and married at New Milford, Connecticut. He moved to Pawlet (Pollitt) Vermont before the Revolution. Elijah's sympathies during the Revolution remained with the king, and he was forced to flee with part of his family to Canada. Consequently, his property was confiscated. Elijah returned to Vermont in 1786 and kept a tavern for many years after the war.
Note A: Elijah Benedict's birth is shown as Sept. 20, 1738 in the Barbour collections.
